Typesafe Founder Recognized at JAX Innovation Awards 2011

Martin Odersky receives Top Java Ambassador award and will donate prize money to support developer contest for Scala and Akka projects

San Jose, CA (June 23, 2011) Typesafe, the Scala company, today announced that its founders were recognized at the JAX Innovation Awards 2011 ceremony during the JAX conference. Martin Odersky, CEO and creator of the Scala programming language, was honored as Top Java Ambassador. The Akka event-driven middleware project, created by Typesafe CTO Jonas Bonér, was a finalist in the Most Innovative Java Technology category.

The Top Java Ambassador award recognizes a person or group that shows outstanding commitment as an advocate of the Java Ecosystem and makes a significant contribution to the establishment of an open culture of communication and innovation within the Java community. The Top Java Ambassador helps to increase the value potential of the Java ecosystem, through technical or organizational accomplishments.

“It’s great honor to be named top Java Ambassador, and I see it as recognition of 16 years of passionate work, first around Java and now around Scala,” says Odersky.  “It has always been my goal to plan functional programming methods in a smooth way in the Java environment. Together with my colleagues at Typesafe we continue to work on this goal more intensively then ever.”

Odersky plans to donate the $2,500 prize money for community development, namely to sponsor a contest where developers submit simple and beautiful code examples presenting features in Scala and Akka.

Typesafe remains dedicated to extending the Java ecosystem by taking the Scala programming language mainstream. Scala, the modern programming language designed for today’s multicore hardware architectures and cloud computing workloads, runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and offers complete interoperability with Java. To underscore its commitment to extending the Java ecosystem through Scala, Typesafe also named to its board of advisors Java creator James Gosling and Java concurrency expert Doug Lea.

The JAX Innovation winners were selected from among hundreds of other individuals, companies, and technologies nominated by investors, analysts, journalists, and industry insiders, and voted on by the general public. The award ceremony was held in San Jose at the JAX Conference.
