Typesafe Releases Typesafe Stack 2.0

Platform now includes Play Framework, enterprise monitoring console and Akka middleware 2.0 for Java and Scala

MENLO PARK, CA -- (Marketwire March 13, 2012) Typesafe today announced the release of Typesafe Stack 2.0, the latest version of its open source software stack. Typesafe Stack 2.0 is a comprehensive platform for building applications in Java and Scala that can scale to the largest workloads in cloud computing and virtualized enterprise datacenter environments. The release adds the innovative Play web framework for the first time, and includes Akka event-driven middleware 2.0, with significant enhancements for building concurrent and distributed applications.

Complementing Typesafe Stack 2.0, the Typesafe Subscription provides commercial support, maintenance and deployment tools, including access to the new Typesafe Console, a monitoring and management tool for the Typesafe Stack. The console complements the Typesafe Stack with an enterprise-grade dashboard for monitoring and administering applications built on the Typesafe Stack, including Akka and Play, and is exclusively available to Typesafe Subscription customers.

“Requirements for developing applications that can handle today’s multicore and parallel computing workloads are changing rapidly,” said Martin Odersky, Typesafe Chairman and Chief Architect. “We’ve seen increased demand from enterprise customers for a comprehensive developer stack to help them solve these challenges. With the release of Typesafe Stack 2.0, including the Play Framework, the Typesafe Console and Akka 2.0, we are delivering on our vision of building a comprehensive and modern software stack for applications that scale.”

“From its inception, the Play Framework was created to bring a fresh web development experience – inspired by modern web frameworks – to the JVM web developer community,” said Guillaume Bort, creator of the Play Framework and member of Typesafe’s Advisory Board. “For the 2.0 version, we wanted to focus on highly-scalable and real-time web applications so including the Play Framework in the Typesafe Stack was a logical next step.”

Typesafe Stack 2.0 also includes key new enhancements to Akka middleware. Akka 2.0 features improved performance scalability (with up to 2.7 million actors per GB of memory) and simplified creation of distributed applications that span many nodes in a cloud computing or virtualized datacenter environment. Other highlights include:

  • Location transparency: Actors may reside locally or on a remote node, without any change in application code or semantics
  • Configuration-based deployment: Application topologies are specified at runtime without any required code changes.
  • Supervision and Life-Cycle Monitoring: Every component of an Akka application is monitored continuously, ensuring that an application will operate predictably in the face of both hardware and software failures.

"We were able to scale to billions of API transactions with a very small team with the extensive use of Play and Akka,” said Felipe Oliveira, Lead Application Services Engineer at Klout. “Scala has also been a powerful development platform for Klout, offering greater scalability and efficiency than our previous platform."

About Typesafe

Typesafe provides the most scalable software platform designed for the computing architectures of the future—multicore, parallel and cloud applications. It does this through the open source Typesafe Stack, a 100% Java compatible software suite that combines the Akka middleware framework, the Play web framework, and the Scala programming language, proven in production with some of the world’s most highly trafficked web properties including Foursquare, LinkedIn and Twitter. The company’s Typesafe Subscription complements the Typesafe Stack with commercial support, maintenance, and operations tools. Typesafe also offers training and consulting services for organizations to ease adoption of Akka, Play, and Scala. Typesafe was co-founded by Martin Odersky, the creator of Scala, and is backed by Greylock Partners.
